Casually they watch it play
and now and then the round
direct face emerges from the profile
clear and whole like a full hour.

which comes to completion and is chimed.
But the others don't count the strokes—
they're dulled by tedium and stuffed with life.
And they don't notice how it bears at all,

how it bears everything, then as always;
sitting beside them as in a waiting-room,
tired of being dressed-up in the little suit,
it bides its time.

Unwillkürlich sehn sie seinem Spiel
lange zu; zuweilen tritt das runde
seiende Gesicht aus dem Profil,
klar und ganz wie eine volle Stunde,

welche anhebt und zu Ende schlägt.
Doch die Andern zahlen nicht die Schläge,
trüb von Mühsal und vom Leben träge;
und sie merken gar nicht, wie es trägt —,

wie es alles trägt, auch dann, noch immer,
wenn es müde in dem kleinen Kleid
neben ihnen wie im Wartezimmer
sitzt und warten will auf seine Zeit.
